I was introduced to the phenomenon of shellrakes by the naturalist John "Crawfish" Crawford. On a tour of the Savannah marshes, he pointed to zigzagged whitish piles between the ocean and the marshy land (Deadman's Hammock). It was not sand, but thousands of oyster shells, pulled and pushed by the tides.
